I want my Higher Power to remove my defects of character. But how can I know if I’m “entirely ready?”
SCA uses the phrase “character defects” to describe the negative core attitudes and instincts that often shape our outlook and drive our behavior. Holding on to these defects can prevent our spiritual growth. Completing a “fearless and moral inventory” as part of Step Four enables us to identify some of our character defects. Working with our sponsor or other trusted program members may make us aware of other shortcomings.
Step Six is almost entirely a spiritual process. By trusting a Higher Power of our understanding, we can make a list of our character defects and ask our Higher Power to remove them. Letting go of our self-will and placing our trust in this power can enable us to become entirely ready, not just willing.
We don’t have the power to remove our defects alone — but our Higher Power does. Our Higher Power can guide us to let go of a defect by taking actions that are contrary to our ingrained habits. For example, if we want our dishonesty removed, we practice honesty. Our behavioral patterns can gradually change as we learn to take contrary actions.
I am grateful that some of my character defects were transformed into assets.
