I finally realized that I could never experience the benefits of recovery unless I took action.
Recovery is a lifelong pursuit and goal, and it is always attainable, one day at a time. Some of us join SCA expecting to get this “recovery stuff” out of the way quickly, then get on with our lives. Making a Sexual Recovery Plan can be a helpful tool for most of us, but making plans in expectation of being “cured” is unrealistic and grandiose.
We work our recovery by using the Steps and Tools in hopes of finding relief from our compulsion. Many of us will notice a change in our behaviors and know we are experiencing some sobriety. But we cannot get sober in a vacuum. Merely stopping destructive behaviors is just the beginning: we learn to replace them with healthy new activities.
Allowing our Higher Power to be part of the process can change our awareness and attitude. We see that others have made great strides in recovery by trusting a Higher Power. Their stories help us to develop a similar trust.
This trust enables us to take actions that nourish our recovery. We become more vigorous advocates for ourselves and develop compassion for others.
Our lives continue to improve as we embrace recovery, one day at a time.
