October 25th Meditation: Romantic Obsession

Sunday, October 25th

I met someone and could not stop thinking about them, even when they did not seem to notice me.

As sexual compulsives, we habitually sought instant gratification through sex that validated us and made us feel complete. Some of us pursued fantasies or developed obsessions about others, and our hunt for excitement or recognition became compulsive.

We may have felt captivated by another person and fantasized about them, giving us a sense of exhilaration. We might have obsessed about them and put our energy into making them notice us. If they responded, our desire to possess them increased. This intense infatuation became our top priority: endlessly fascinating, often painful, and always urgent.

The intensity of our fixation and the stress of maintaining it led to severe anxiety. We feared rejection, which invariably added to our feelings of shame and low self-esteem.

In recovery, we learn to use our spiritual tools to help us separate fantasy from reality, both in life and in intimate relationships. By developing trust in a Higher Power, we begin to heal from our negative controlling feelings and show compassion for ourselves and others. We can let go of the shame and desperation that drew us into romantic obsessions.

We will allow our Higher Power to be our guide in relationships.
