October 14th Meditation: Spiritual Change

Wednesday, October 14th

I get a daily reprieve by maintaining my spiritual condition.

Step Twelve begins: “Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps…”

Some may ask what a spiritual awakening is and how we will know we have experienced it. If we are sober from our “bottom-line” behaviors, have we had a spiritual awakening?

Paraphrasing AA’s Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, we are told that the most important meaning of a spiritual awakening is that we have now become able to do, feel, and believe that which we could not do before on our unaided strength and resources alone.

We may acknowledge that our lives have noticeably changed, but we may not be able to explain exactly how this happened. We might associate these changes with surrender and acceptance, leading to freedom and grace in our humility.

This newfound freedom from the burdens of our ego can enable us to embrace a new sense of purpose in our lives. The more we practice connecting with others, the more we improve and expand our conscious contact with our Higher Power. We can let go of the past and embrace the present. We can give to others what we have freely received.

We will discover ourselves, our spirituality, and our connection to our Higher Power.
