September 9th Meditation: Signs of Recovery

Wednesday, September 9th

My Higher Power has shown me, one day at a time, that it is possible to live without compulsive activities in my life.

As sexual compulsives, we might rely on a “quick-fix” approach to deal with stressful challenges in our lives. We may act out to avoid having to face these challenges.

In recovery, we sometimes feel impatient and discouraged by our apparent slow progress. Working the Steps may provide some insight and hope, but the process can seem slow and unfulfilling. Despite being cautioned, we might still feel disappointed that there is no sudden flash of understanding: no “ah-ha!” moment.

Ironically, other members often see the healing process working in us before we notice it ourselves. We might be the last to realize how much our recovery is doing for us. Many of us are so used to thinking of ourselves as failures that we might worry about never getting well, even as we are getting well.

Yet, we might notice some changes. Staying on our plan becomes less stressful; we begin to practice self-care; we help others through service or sponsorship; we share honestly and openly, without shame. These signs are the moving parts of wholeness and acceptance that we gradually recognize.

Today, my needs are met. I won’t worry about tomorrow until tomorrow.
