September 6th Meditation: Humility as Freedom

Sunday, September 6th

I get a daily reprieve from my compulsion based on my spiritual connection that day.

For many of us, humility is a concept we might associate with low self-esteem or thinking of ourselves as “less than.” In our sexually compulsive state, we can easily confuse “humility” with “humiliation” and think of those words as expressions of shame. We might see ourselves as unworthy compared to others and find ourselves envying their looks, social success, wealth, or relationships.

In recovery, the concept of humility appears in Step Seven: Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings. This doesn’t mean defeat. It means trust, acceptance, and hope.

The Steps teach us that humility is not a low view of our importance but rather a state of acceptance and affirmation. By being humble, we are not belittling ourselves. We are admitting that we don’t have all the answers and that we are willing to let go of our need for control.

Through our Higher Power, we learn to accept who we are at this time and shed the burdens of perfectionism and grandiosity that can arise from feelings of shame and low self-esteem.

This change is part of a spiritual awakening that frees us from trying to be someone we are not.
