I was not willing to commit to the program; I thought I could recover on my own.
Before recovery, many of us focused primarily on searching for or having compulsive sex. We generally did not have enough bandwidth to include family, friends, self-care, money matters, etc.
Seeking relief from our compulsion, we started to attend SCA meetings and began to learn about recovery. Hearing about the Steps and Tools, we may have felt overwhelmed by our new surroundings. All this recovery talk sounds good, but how do we recover?
Faced with the possibility of working the Steps, some of us may put it off, vowing to work them later. We may justify our non-commitment, claiming that we are taking care of ourselves by going home early and skipping a meeting — then find ourselves going online to look for compulsive sex “just for a little while.”
Yet, we might hear someone share about their third Step and how their trust in a Higher Power led them to take positive actions. We see that others have taken the actions we fear, and they survive and even thrive. By learning to trust, we, too, may begin to take actions that open us up to new insight and the ability to make changes.
My recovery thrives if I work it.
