What kept me coming back? It was the hope that my life could be different.
Before recovery, many of us instinctively felt that our sexual compulsion was taking us further away from self-awareness and reality. This void in our lives contributed to our shame and made us more likely to dismiss the value of any spiritual way of life.
When we enter the SCA rooms, we hear that believing in a Higher Power can restore us to sanity. We listen to others share their stories about how they grew to trust in their Higher Power. Reading and thinking about Steps Two and Three may clarify how we might define our Higher Power and use it in recovery. Whatever works is appropriate.
SCA does not require us to “believe” anything. However, as we work our recovery, we stop believing we can somehow “cure” ourselves from sexual compulsion through willpower alone. By recognizing and stripping away this false belief, we can accept help.
Trusting in a Higher Power means letting it into our lives, helping us direct our actions in ways that can change our behaviors and outlook. This trust helps bring about further spiritual growth as we heal.
Trusting my Higher Power has expanded my life. I enjoy my sexuality.
