October 1st Meditation: Outside Issues

Thursday, October 1st

A member talked about politics during their share. Even though I agreed with their opinion, I still felt annoyed and distracted.

SCA members can feel free to share openly and honestly about their sexual compulsion at meetings without fear of being shamed or judged. As we listen to others, we may find hope and strength to work our recovery. Support and love within this fellowship can help break the cycle of shame and low self-esteem that can sometimes trigger us.

Many of us have strong feelings about other issues and current events, which may cause us to shun friendships and intimacy, self-isolate, and perhaps act out our frustrations or rage through compulsive sex. While sharing our feelings in meetings is encouraged, mentioning outside issues is not within the scope of our program. Doing so can cause dissent within the group and make other members uncomfortable.

Our primary purpose is to carry the message to the sexual compulsive who still suffers. SCA’s Tradition Ten reminds us that SCA has no opinion on outside issues. Listening to others, withholding judgment, and being open-minded promote spiritual growth. Letting go of our need to control the opinions of others affirms trust in our Higher Power.

Abiding by the Traditions of SCA can help keep the focus on our recovery.
