September 30th Meditation: Helping Others

Wednesday, September 30th

My recovery feels solid when I get help and pass that help on to others.

Many of us were self-absorbed during our active sexual compulsion. We may have viewed others only as potential sex partners or perhaps as obstacles to getting what we wanted through acting out. The notion of asking for help or helping others was outside our comfort zone; self-isolation seemed safer.

In recovery, we discover that it is OK to ask for help from a sponsor, a program friend, or anyone who can assist us. By trusting our Higher Power, we can learn to overcome ingrained fears of shame and humiliation and relate honestly with other members.

We can benefit others by committing to a service position. We can also help through personal interactions, which may include sponsoring someone, receiving a program phone call, or responding to someone’s plea for help. By taking such actions, we may find that doing service affirms our humanity and connection with the fellowship.

Helping people is a by-product of spiritual growth. Esteemable acts increase our self-esteem and allow us to develop compassion for others. In doing so, we nurture ourselves through friendships and social interaction.

My sobriety thrives when I help others stay sober. Service has been my most effective tool.
