July 13th Meditation: Practicing These Principles

Monday, July 13th

I had taken back my life, and the promises of the program were coming true.

SCA is a Twelve Step program of recovery. Most of us consider the Steps to be the “heart” of the program, though nobody can require us to read, study, or work them.

The Steps are suggestions that many view as guiding principles that can help us on our recovery journey. By admitting our powerlessness, placing trust in a Higher Power of our understanding, doing an honest inventory to identify and remove character defects, restoring relationships, and maintaining contact with our Higher Power, we can experience spiritual growth that enables change.

When we change our behavior, our lives expand, we become more engaged, and our lives continue to improve.

As we complete Step Twelve, we might take time to read that final phrase carefully: “…and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” This suggestion is open-ended. It tells us that our spiritual change has opened the door to a new way of living — if we practice these principles in our daily lives. We can continually revisit and review the Steps as our needs arise.

“Today, I still work the Steps because I’m still human. The process of surrender never ends.”

The more we work Step Twelve, the better we get at it.
