August 26thDefining My Higher Power

All this Higher Power talk sounds religious. What am I supposed to believe?

SCA does not require us to “believe” anything. As we work our recovery, we can stop believing that we can somehow cure ourselves from sexual compulsion by applying pressure and willpower. When we recognize and strip away these false beliefs, we can accept help.

In Step Two, we hear about a power greater than ourselves and become willing to trust this unknown power in Step Three. How can we trust a concept that we cannot readily identify? We can conceive of such a power—if it is greater than ourselves—as a Higher Power. That is simple enough. But what is our Higher Power?

Our Higher Power may equate to a traditional understanding of God, perhaps our conception of a deity, or maybe the group’s collective wisdom. Some SCA members focus on finding a Higher Power that has a positive attitude toward sex and sexuality. We define this power for ourselves; therefore, it is an integral part of us.

Once we begin to trust that a Higher Power of our understanding cares for us, we can start taking actions to change our lives, knowing that we are not alone. There is help.

Through intimacy with my Higher Power, I have learned to turn over my control.
