July 6th Meditation: Staying on My Plan

Monday, July 6th

I attended meetings but kept slipping off my Sexual Recovery Plan. Sobriety seemed out of my reach.

Many of us felt overwhelmed by anxiety and shame, which often fueled our hunt for compulsive sex. We used sex to escape such feelings, which only deepened our isolation and low self-esteem.

Upon entering SCA, we might continue to struggle with these emotions. Sometimes, these negative feelings can turn into self-sabotage. We may feel so unworthy that even a positive accomplishment or joyful event might induce us to respond by slipping off our Sexual Recovery Plan and acting out our compulsions.

Initially, our SRP may seem too rigid as we restrict our activities in an effort to control our compulsion. When we are gentle with ourselves and work with our sponsor, our SRP can evolve and become integrated into our sober life.

Our Sexual Recovery Plan’s primary purpose is to allow us to replace our harmful sexual behaviors and old attitudes with new activities, people, places, and things in our lives. By working the Steps, we begin to put our house in order and restore relationships with ourselves, our Higher Power, and others. As we work through our past baggage, we can accept a new way of living that does not include old behaviors.

As our lives expand, our sobriety becomes easier.
