March 20th Meditation: Trapped in Cybersex

Thursday, March 20th

I wasn’t even fully aware that I was constantly escaping into fantasy. It was like breathing.

Cybersex offers virtually limitless possibilities to satisfy our sexual yearnings: to create and act out fantasies without any personal contact. We may use pornography or other internet sites to escape feelings of shame and low self-esteem by creating our own reality. We might go on the apps or use webcams, hoping to find validation and connection.

However, we find that these activities eventually take a toll on our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

“I didn’t realize that I couldn’t cut back my apps addiction and tried to stop ‘cold turkey.’ To compensate, I masturbated constantly.”

After repeated and intense use of apps, pornography, and the internet, we may discover that our lives have become smaller.

We can begin to recover by accepting the possibility of creating new ways of living. Recalling that Twelve Step recovery is a spiritual process, we consider making changes that can lead to behavioral changes. We become willing to accept a different outlook, a sense that we aren’t alone and that help is available.

With acceptance, we no longer use our compulsion to numb our feelings or lose ourselves in hours of endless isolation.

Our lives begin to expand in ways we may not have believed possible.
