When I heard the Characteristics read in a meeting, I heard my life story and immediately felt at home.
SCA does not tell us to believe or do anything. Our third Tradition says: The only requirement for SCA membership is a desire to stop having compulsive sex. Period. Everything else is optional.
We join the program and attend meetings to find relief from our compulsive sexual acting out. When we first hear others tell their stories, we may hope to find a path for our recovery journey.
Early on, we learn about the Twelve Steps and the other tools of recovery. We may start to work with a sponsor or perhaps join a Step-writing group. Some work the Steps methodically or vigorously; others might use a slower approach or delay working them for a while. There is no right way to work the Steps.
We focus mainly on how to stop our compulsive behavior. Many of us work the Steps to effect a spiritual change that will diminish our desire to act out. Some are nourished by the support of other members or trust in their Higher Power to help them take the next right action.
“Take what you need and leave the rest” means that each of us works our recovery in our own way.
