February 25th Meditation: On Isolation

Tuesday, February 25th

“Isolation is a recovery killer.”

For many sexual compulsives, retreating into isolation became a way of life. Feelings of shame and low self-esteem often fueled our acting-out behaviors, which only increased our shame. We tried to escape these feelings by numbing ourselves through sex and concealing our activities from family, friends, and associates.

“I often took refuge in my fantasy world: being glued to the apps, frequenting bathhouses and booth stores, or watching porn. I made up excuses not to do anything that didn’t involve sex or my job.”

In recovery, we find the courage to sit with our feelings. We do this by working the Steps and learning to accept and trust a Higher Power of our understanding. We begin to shatter the wall of isolation we have built, but it takes time and effort. When we admit our powerlessness and unmanageability, the wall that surrounds us begins to crack open.

SCA is a “we” program, not a “me” program. Recovery is a shared experience. We gain strength from our fellow members and give support in return.

“The impenetrable walls of lies and isolation I had spent years building have crumbled. I now have a safe haven to come to each week where I’m loved and accepted for exactly who I am.”
