Sponsorship can be both a bridge and a catalyst to bring us out of isolation.
SCA’s Tradition Five states: “Each group has but one primary purpose – to carry its message to the sexual compulsive who still suffers.” As the slogan states, To keep it, you give it away. Assisting others in their recovery can help us maintain our sexual sobriety. The Tools of Recovery says: “Sponsorship is two people with the same problem helping each other to work the program.”
Working with a sponsor can help us engage more readily, effectively, and healthily with the larger world. Sponsors have experience, strength, and hope from working their own recovery from sexual compulsion. When being sponsored, we find the courage to acknowledge our needs, ask for, and accept help. A sponsor can also help us see ourselves more realistically and accept our shortcomings and challenges as we work to bring healthy changes to our lives.
I am working the Steps with my sponsor, and it has helped me stay close to the program as if my life depended on it, which it does.
