December 24th Meditation: Restoring Us to Sanity

Tuesday, December 24th

All I needed was some faith that my life could be different.

For many, our sexually compulsive acting out had become habitual and monotonous. We kept doing the same things, hoping for different results — validation, connection, and contentment. Looking back, we might judge our behaviors as insane, though we earlier believed that we acted out of desperation.

But how do we transform from being self-willed people to asking for help from some mysterious power greater than ourselves?

SCA does not require us to believe anything. However, as we work our recovery, we stop believing that we can somehow cure ourselves from sexual compulsion by applying pressure and willpower.

Step Two tells us that our powerlessness and unmanageability over sexual compulsion is not a hopeless case: that we can be restored to sanity. We ask for help from someone or something — a power outside our self-will. We define that power for ourselves. It need not be a deity or deities. It might be the collective wisdom of the group.

Some of us focus on finding a Higher Power that has a positive attitude toward sex and sexuality. Whatever works is appropriate. Through acceptance and trust, we may develop faith that our lives can change.

Being restored to sanity means we do something different to get different results.
