I was skeptical that using the Tools could help lift my compulsion.
For many sexual compulsives, early recovery was confusing and stressful. However empty and unsatisfying our sexual acting out had been, it had often been a mindless ritual that provided an escape from our feelings.
Confronting reality made us feel uncomfortable. But by admitting we were powerless and that our lives had become unmanageable, we began to lift the weight of denial and shame.
At our first SCA meeting, we may hear about how the Twelve Steps and Tools of Recovery can lead to a spiritual transformation, enabling us to change our outlook and behaviors. For some, this may seem unattainable and unrealistic.
As we listen to their stories, though, we might sense that recovery seems to be working for other members. By hearing how others use the Tools to make changes, we become willing to follow their example.
Working with a sponsor or other program members, we may find that these resources can help us in ways we hadn’t thought possible. While recovery works differently for everyone, we may find that our world expands through self-acceptance and that we develop courage and willingness to take the next right action.
The Tools are great gifts, and I am learning how to use them.
